PART TWO

CHAPTER ELEVEN

It was so dark. Mungo, and his Men In Black, had won. I was imprisoned. Maybe locked in a cell. Locked away in some hole deep in the ground. A place impossible to escape from.

I’d never experienced darkness so black. So thick. I felt I could take it and mould it like clay. Odd that the cell didn’t smell like I imagined a cell should smell. It should stink of sweat and piss. It didn’t. But what did I know, anyway? Instead, there was a strong, sweet, musky smell. It reminded me of Brghyn and the time he carried me after the Manic poisoning. The random thought skittered into my brain. Did all Hayyo’imli smell musky? Perhaps it came from me, but after a quick sniff of my armpits, I was sure it didn’t.

Legs pulled up to my chest, arms wrapped tightly around them, I knew this was the end of the road. The Men In Black would dissect me, mind and body. Bye Mum and Dad. Bye-bye earth. N’arth. Universe. I shouldn’t have listened to Mungo. I shouldn’t have been so curious about what he had to say. I should have just used the Stone and the Tooth and hoped that they’d transport me from my garden to N’arth.

Stupid curiosity.

Stupid pride.

Stupid me wanting to get the better of them. To let them know that I’d got the better of them.

I shivered and pushed myself further back into the wall, comforted by the fact that I was still wearing my backpack with all its carefully purchased survival gear. Hand still fisted around the HeartStone and the Tooth, I dragged my backpack onto my lap, grabbed the metal water flask, and drank deeply.

Why hadn’t they taken my stuff away from me? Wait! I still had the artefacts. I could get away. I sat up straight and inhaled a deep belly breath, preparing to sing the bass note of the chord that initiated the transportation. No sound came out of my mouth. Nothing. It was as if I were back on the ensorcelled Tetralyon, where singing had been outlawed by Fircule. Singing gave strength back to exhausted HeartStones, and it was his mission to destroy the stones, their power and the world of N’arth.

The dark pressed against my teeth and I clamped my mouth shut, afraid if I swallowed any I would choke.

Welcome.

The voice was deeper than any voice I’d ever heard before. So deep it made my bones vibrate. So close it felt like it was coming from inside me.

I didn’t want to open my mouth and answer. That would be to let the blackness pour in. Squashing my backpack against my knees, I curled up again and pushed myself back onto a warm, uneven wall. Would a prison have warm walls? Where was I?

Hayyo’imli, I feared your race had died, and we were both doomed forever.

I breathed in through my nose and out through my mouth. In. Out. In. Out. Searching for the courage to reply. ‘Not Hayyo’imli. Shannon.
